Creating a self-care kit is an easy way to ensure some time is spent on yourself. It also makes a great gift! You can create a self-care kit for a friend or family member or even as a hostess gift.
What is a Self-Care Kit?
A self-care kit is like a first aid kit but for your brain and emotions. I am a huge self-care advocate! In my mental illness recovery journey, self-care is probably one of the most important things that has contributed to my progress. Self-care is a purposeful activity that promotes physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health.
Self-care improves our mood, reduces stress and anxiety, strengthens our emotional intellect, and improves relationships (with ourselves and others). If you take care of yourself, it is easier to take care of others.
3 Self-Care Kit Essentials:
- It is important that a self-care kit includes the 5 senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste). Using the 5 senses allows one to really be in the moment and practice mindfulness.
- A self-care kit should include items that promote physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health.
- Find the right package to hold your self-care kit. Some ideas are boxes, baskets, bags or a drawer. Find what works for you. A bag works really well because you can take it with you.
Self-Care Kit Ideas:
Colouring for adults has become very popular in recent years. It relieves stress and promotes creativity. There are a lot of fun adult colouring books out there or find a kid-friendly one. There are also many colouring books for stress relief. My favourite is the adult colouring books 😃.
Journals are a great way to clear the mind. There are many different types of journals that can be beneficial. Blank journals, guided journals, leatherbound journals, and even gratitude journals. I really enjoy the Leuchtturm 1917 Notebooks, which are a blank journal.
Books are such a wonderful way to escape or to self-reflect and learn. Here are some of my favourite books.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing on how to approach the world – by not giving a fuck about anything.
You are a Badass motivates you to live your best life. YOLO!
Girl Wash Your Face shows you how to live life with passion and hustle.
Harry Potter is my ultimate escape! Who wouldn’t want to be a wizard and save the world?!
Candles and Diffusers:
I love these flameless candles. They set the mood but are safe to use.
Salt Lamps also provide a warm glow. I love my salt lamp!
Therapeutic diffusers fill the space with a lovely fragrance. Pick your favourite scent to relax.
Pick your favourite essential oils to use in your diffuser. There are so many scents to use for different reasons.
Bath & Beauty:
Nothing says self-care than a warm bath or personal hygiene. Enjoy a more luxurious bath by adding Epsom salts, bath salts, bath bomb or bubble bath. My favourite is Dr. Teal’s Epsom salt bubble bath.
Or some body butter after the bath. This one is white chocolate!
Being creative or doing something with your hands can be very relaxing. Include your favourite hobby in your self-care kit. I love doing puzzles.
These new Diamond Dotz crafts are all the rage. It’s like paint by numbers with rhinestones. I have completed one and found it very relaxing.
